Therapy
How can therapy help you?
Any talking therapy aims to help you feel better about yourself, your life and circumstances, people and situations. Counselling or psychotherapy may involve exploring and trying to identify all the deep-rooted beliefs and thoughts you hold about yourself and your life which has been blocking change and growth. We understand that this process can sometimes feel overwhelming or painful because these are the very thoughts and feelings that you usually try to block out or avoid, but we are here to support you and assist you in finding ways to cope with painful emotions and to find ways to tackle problems that previously have felt too difficult to manage. Despite all the challenges mentioned above, it is worth the effort because you are worth the effort. Investing in yourself could be the most valuable investment you make in your life.
Counselling
What is Counselling?
In short, counselling describes all sorts of talking therapies.
Talk therapy is a very effective method to speak to a trained professional who is a great listener and can help you understand yourself and others better by prompting you to ask the right questions in a safe and supportive environment.
Counselling is usually a short-term process that focuses on specific issues and helps you address a particular problem loop that you are experiencing in the present moment. Most often, counselling deals with but is not limited to things that are making you stressed, such as challenges that you are facing at home or work, or it could also be traumatic circumstances such as a breakup, divorce, or bereavement. Counselling can also help to address issues surrounding low self-esteem and addictions. Usually, during the first meeting with your therapist, you agree on the number of sessions you will work with, which can range between 12 to 24 weeks or more.
Psychotherapy
What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a long-term process that focuses on you as an individual, on your thoughts, motivations, and behavioural patterns.
Similarly to counselling, it can also help you tackle present issues like stress, relationship issues, bereavement, sexual problems, and addictions. It also deals with mental health challenges like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and, PTSD, personality disorders like OCD. It can be a very effective way to alleviate emotional suffering.
However, one of the critical differences between psychotherapy and counselling is that psychotherapy doesn’t only focus on present issues but also on past problems by helping you to deeply understand your emotions by looking at your past. It encourages you to revisit your childhood experiences that shaped your life and personality in ways that might still be causing you issues now. One of the purposes of psychotherapy is to find the very roots of your problems and challenges and to make these unconscious feelings conscious through exposure, interpretation and contextualisation so that we can understand how our inner conflicts affect us in our daily lives.
Psychotherapy also profoundly explores the self, examining questions of identity and beliefs. During or after a session, you might ask questions such as Who am I? How did I become this person? Whom do I want to become?
Another approach your therapist may choose to use is called
`Transference`
Transference involves experiencing some of the feelings you have towards someone close to you or from your past, like a parent or partner, towards your therapist. With this type of therapy, you can start to notice and observe what is happening to you and how you are thinking and feeling, and you can explore any distortions in your ways of thinking so that you can be freer to think, act and feel in a way that feels better for you.
As mentioned above, psychotherapy is a long-term process which can range anywhere from several months to years, as it tends to work with what comes up in each session without any imposed format or overall plan for the direction of your therapy.

Frequently asked questions
How does therapy work?
During talking therapy, your qualified therapist will listen to you and help you find your own answers to problems without any judgement. Talking therapy is a collaborative process and will require you to be open about your experiences, thoughts and feelings.
How long is each session?
Therapy usually lasts around 50 minutes. The first free consultation is approximately 30 minutes.
How often would I come to therapy?
During the beginning stages of therapy, it would be beneficial to attend therapy weekly, as this will form the therapeutic relationship. Once a rapport has been built, you can discuss it with your therapist.
Is what we discuss in sessions confidential?
In line with the BACP (2018) Ethical Framework, all sessions will be confidential unless you mention anything linked to harm to self or harm to others.
How do I schedule an appointment?
Once the first session has been agreed upon, you will receive an email asking you to book your first session on Fresha (booking system). You will be asked to enter your email and the time and date of your choice. Finally, a payment section will be required to book your session successfully.
